A Bear Hug

This is my most recent piece, it's a two page comic, more just a scene of something I'd like to develop further. I've always been interested in old myths and fairytales and I'm kind of creating my own ones here. I used liquid ink for the lines and Promarkers for colouring again.

I'll put some photos here of the process from pencil sketches through inking and colour testing too.

Plant life/Parklife

Great news: I've joined the 21st century and have a smartphone so nothing's going to keep me down now! I drew this as a birthday card for my friend Jari, my plant sat patiently as a model. As you can see I use Promarkers, love them!

Also I've been going to hang out at my boyfriend's workplace like a creep and drawing strangers, good to get back on sketching and it's a nice challenge when people don't sit still. This guy did though hence the portrait is more accurate than the others.

I got challenged in social media to share photos about my everyday life and as a crafty girl who unfortunately owns none of the modern day gadgets I drew some instead.

Greek mythology creeps into everything!

I drew a birthday card for a friend and experimented with pens this time! To be fair I wouldn't have strayed away from my comfort zone if I had had my quill and ink at hand but I'm travelling at the moment and only had some pens with me. It was good though, I quite enjoyed them for change and was positively surprised with the outcome. The idea was to make an angel for good luck but I can't help thinking it looks a bit more like a sleepy harpy. I'll never be a good Christian.

Comeback!

Apologies for not updating the blog for ages! I had some right adventures in the last eight months but now since my life has calmed down a bit I thought I'd share some character designs I've done. These were for a film project but unfortunately I had to pull out for health reasons (Can anyone hear the smallest violin in the world playing?). I'll add a few more when I get the scanner sorted out!

New goddess!

Here's the third deity in what's turning into a bit of a series now. This one's Artemis, the goddess of wild animals, hunting and childbirth. I drew her as a kind of a patron saint for my friend who's a midwife.

I used indian ink and promarkers again (and the flash gold and silver pens!). Here's the drawing before I coloured it:

Limeade posters

Limeade's our almost fortnightly mucic event in the Globe Tavern, here's some of the posters I've done. The first one's a bit scruffy but I'll show it to you just for it's humour value!

Death and tiger are doing a comeback!

I've wanted to bring these two characters from my first publication (unfortunately they're not in the story posted earlier in this blog) back and when my friend asked me to draw something for his festival zine I knew their time had come! The festival is called Gelati, hence the ice cream. Though does ice cream need any excuses?

I've been recently drawing some portraits of my friends. I've used indian ink and Promarker pens (and an awesome gold pen too!) in these ones. Oh except in Anna's one I used a byro, indian ink and inkwash.

My friend asked me to design a Christmas card for her and her boyfriend. She's becoming a reoccuring feature in this blog since the cat lady in one of my earliest posts is her portrait too!

For ages I wanted to draw a sister picture for Kali and here's Venus (or Afrodite, whether you prefer Greek mythology to Roman). This seems to be turning into a series!

Oldies goldies

It is time to take a trip on memory lane and share THE FIRST EVER COMIC I DREW:

I did it on this graphic storytelling class in art college around 2009. Believe it or not, it is based on true events - extremely loosely! I had always wanted to draw comics but lacked the confidence to try. With our tutor's assistance and with the valuable advice she gave us I was rocking it so I did a little comic zine, Kaljaa Freddien Kanssa (Beer With Freddie), as a school project in 2010. Here's some samples: The first one with the grim reaper is a kind of a prologue, and the ones following are the first story in whole.

Translation for the English readers:

Going Folky!

I made this comic strip in autumn 2010, the girl is singing an old, I dare to say iconic, Finnish song called Juokse Sina Humma - in the original song the singer is a boy though. I got a lot of help for the English translation from my friend Milena, thank you ever so much!
